Cheap Used Laptops
Save You Money...

Quality used laptops bring a nice discount, and come in several flavors. As always, buying smart will allow you to find the right laptop to suit your needs. You might even be able to find one that is only sightly used.

I've broken down the types of used laptops into several categories for you. Here they are:

  • open box laptops
  • leasebacks
  • trade-in resales
  • bulk used clearance

Buying smart means knowing what you are getting. Keep in mind that there is always a reason why a product is at a reduced price. Each one of these categories has its own set of characteristics of which you should be aware. Either way, you can save money buying used.

Let's look at what each of these categories means so that you understand how to buy the laptop that is right for you:

  • open box laptops - these are typically laptops that were purchased and returned. The return policies on computer products are usually rather short, so these systems are typically not used for more than a few days to weeks at the most. They are usually "almost new."

Why were they returned? More than likely buyers remorse, as most people either overbuy or underbuy, or they decided (or were told!) that a laptop was not for them.

Another possible reason for an open box product could be that the unit was a demo model. Also, sometimes a reseller will open a box to get to a missing or defective item for another system. They replace the item they took (or not) and sell the laptop as open box.

  • leasebacks - some individuals, and many companies, both small and large, lease computers. Lease terms are typically from two to four years. At that time, the laptops are returned. Ones in bad shape may be cannibalized for parts. The good ones are fixed up if needed, and resold. So, these may or may not be refurbished laptops.

  • trade in resales - people looking to upgrade to a newer model will sometimes trade in a laptop. These units are then resold at a discount.

  • bulk used clearance - some companies act as clearing houses for used computer equipment, including laptops and notebooks. These companies may buy in bulk from companies that handle leasebacks, computer manufacturers or distributors, or redemption outfits that handle the disposition of corporate technology assets. These may or may not be refurbished models.

Used laptops can be a great savings over other buying options. If you're goal is to buy a cheap used laptop, then at least one of these categories above from the sources that offer them will be a good fit for you.

Review the information above and decide what your comfort level is. You'll then be able to make an informed decision on your used laptop purchase.
